there’s always a stage of reference picture taking for me, sometimes even before i’m doing layouts (like tony harris did for ex machina). than i’m drawing the actual pose in double size or larger with a pencil on paper, scan it and do the main work digitally. 90% of my backgrounds are imported 3d models.
